The Perception of Causality in Light of Process Ontology
2015
Human perception has an important emotional dimension. Besides having a “presentational” element that dominates the high cognitive activities of human beings, there are certain “densities of feelings,” which are inextricably intertwined with the presentational contents of our perceptual states. This does not mean that human perception is just instinctive, irrational, or intrinsically subjective. The Whiteheadian scheme allows us to determine the nature of the “emotional background” of perception without falling into the traps of subjectivism, representationalism, or substantialism. The feeling which I call “the sense of physicality” is just one of the elements of this emotional dimension in…
A local approach to a class of locally finite groups
2003
This paper is devoted to the study of a class of generalised P-nilpotent groups in the universe cℒ̄ of all radical locally finite groups satisfying min-q for every prime q. Some results of finite groups are extended and a characterisation of the injectors associated with this class is given.
Infection of murine hepatocyte cultures by herpes simplex virus (HSV) 1 and 2
1984
A study was undertaken of the interaction between liver cells and Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) in vitro. Hepatocytes were obtained from HSV-resistant (C57/B16) and from HSV-susceptible (BALB/c, A/J, C3H) mouse strains and cultured according to standard methods. Each culture was infected with several strains of HSV-type 1 or of HSV-type 2, respectively. The multiplicity of infection was 5. The cytopathic effect was evaluated by light- and electron-microscopy. The number of infectious particles was determined using rabbit kidney or Vero cell cultures. All evaluations were made at different time intervals after infection. No difference concerning the replication rate of HSV-1 and 2 in isolated h…

Some results concerning simple locally finite groups of 1-type
2005
AbstractIn this paper several aspects of infinite simple locally finite groups of 1-type are considered. In the first part, the classes of diagonal limits of finite alternating groups, of diagonal limits of finite direct products of alternating groups, and of absolutely simple groups of 1-type are distinguished from each other. In the second part, inductive systems of representations over fields of characteristic zero (which are known to correspond to ideals in the group algebra) are studied in general for groups of 1-type. The roles of primitive respectively imprimitive representations in inductive systems are investigated. Moreover it is shown that in any proper inductive system the depth…
Genetic structure in the Mediterranean seagrass Posidonia oceanica: disentangling past vicariance events from contemporary patterns of gene flow
2010
The Mediterranean Sea is a two-basin system, with the boundary zone restricted to the Strait of Sicily and the narrow Strait of Messina. Two main population groups are recognized in the Mediterranean endemic seagrass Posidonia oceanica, corresponding to the Western and the Eastern basins. To address the nature of the East-West cleavage in P. oceanica, the main aims of this study were: (i) to define the genetic structure within the potential contact zone (i.e. the Strait of Sicily) and clarify the extent of gene flow between the two population groups, and (ii) to investigate the role of present water circulation patterns vs. past evolutionary events on the observed genetic pattern. To achiev…
Enhancement by TNF-alpha of reactivation and replication of latent herpes simplex virus from trigeminal ganglia of mice.
1995
The influence of tumor-necrosis-factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), interleukine-1 (IL-1) and IL-3 on the in vitro reactivation frequency and replication rate of trigeminal ganglia of mice latently infected with herpes simplex virus (HSV) strain KOS was studied. It could be demonstrated that TNF-alpha and possibility GM-CSF, but not IL-1 and IL-3, enhanced the reactivation frequency and replication of HSV. Interferon alpha/beta (IFN alpha/beta) prevented reactivation and replication.
Groups with few $p'$-character degrees
2019
Abstract We prove a variation of Thompson's Theorem. Namely, if the first column of the character table of a finite group G contains only two distinct values not divisible by a given prime number p > 3 , then O p p ′ p p ′ ( G ) = 1 . This is done by using the classification of finite simple groups.
Translocation of the nuclear autoantigen La to the cell surface of herpes simplex virus type 1 infected cells.
1992
Recently we developed a procedure to translocalize one of the extractable nuclear antigens (ENAs), the La protein, to the cell surface of CV-1 cells. Here we report that herpes simplex virus type 1 infection can also induce a translocation of the autoantigen to the cell surface. On the cell surface we detected La protein assembled with large protrusions. Within these protrusions La protein colocalized with virus particles. These protrusions are known to be released from the cell after virus infections. Such complexes consisting of self and virus could provide helper determinants for an anti-self response, and therefore be important in generation of autoimmunity.
Endoparasites of the blue whiting, Micromesistius poutassou from north-west Spain.
2005
AbstractThe communities of metazoan endoparasites of blue whiting, Micromesistius poutassou, in waters of north-west Spain were analysed and a geographical comparison made with other localities. Four hundred blue whiting collected in July 1999 and September 2000 were examined for parasites, excluding the head and gills. Six species were found: Anisakis simplex s.l. (L3), A. physeteris (L3), Hysterothylacium aduncum (L2 and L3), Stephanostomum lophii (metacercaria), S. pristis (adult), and Prosorhynchus crucibulum (metacercaria). The latter is a new host record, and A. physeteris is reported for the first time in blue whiting from the north-east Atlantic. Host gender was not a significant pr…
